Explore the Mysterious Sabah's Lost World ``Maliau Basin``

Nobody knows exactly how much of the world's rainforests have already been destroyed, but thankfully there is still places that unexplored.

Sabah has so much to offer to the world, like the “Maliau Basin", it's one of the last remaining natural treasure in the state of Sabah.

Maliau Basin has a saucer-shaped geological structure, surrounded by cliffs and steep slopes range from 300 to 1,600 meters above sea level, a hidden paradise of flora, fauna and located in south-central Sabah. Other than that, it is also known as “Sabah’s Lost World” because it's untouched by the hand of man, really a hidden gem in the region of Borneo.

The pristine rainforest is home to a diverse range of species of flora and fauna, distinctive wildlife and striking waterfalls. Overall its being an excellent destination for jungle trekking and wildlife spotting, nature explorers will love this trip for discovering the wealth of natural beauty on offer.

The most highlighted thing is the trek to the famous Seven Tier Maliau Falls on the Maliau River, the highest fall of which is a magnificent 28m. This is surely one of those experiences you will always never forget.

Some of the endangered animals that can be found here are Sumatran Rhino and Proboscis monkey, while there are about more than 460 species of flora discovered, example pitcher plant, orchids and rafflesia.

Accommodation facilities are kept in certain areas, while bathing and water facilities in the nearby rivers.

Maliau Basin is a dense jungle wilderness, and with no roads, can only be explored by foot.

How to get there

Maliau Conservation Area is accessible either via Tawau or Keningau. It’s a 190km or approximately five hours journey from Tawau and Keningau. Four wheel drive vehicles are essential as most of the journey is on rough terrain.

Gate passes for each vehicle complete with names of passengers must be shown at the Maliau Basin Security Gate before entering. These passes can be obtained from the Yayasan Sabah Forestry Division offices in Kota Kinabalu or Tawau.
