On the 5th May 2016, sini.com.my had the opportunity to do food review on Chequers Restaurant that is located at Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI). We were so excited because we have heard that Chequers served delicious waffles. It is not a normal waffles that you will find it anywhere, it is unique and they have brought up the different level of waffles.

As we entered to Chequers restaurant, we were warmly greeted by the owner, Mr Tim and his staffs. Then, we sat down and looked around this restaurant. We were attracted to interior design and we almost understood why it is called Chequers. While waiting for our food, the owner sat down with us and we had a friendly conversation about Chequers.

What inspired Mr Tim to open chequers - two years back, Mr Tim and his brother has managed to travel around while studying in US and they have found out that waffles are one of the famous dish in every state of US. From there, they got an idea to set up a restaurant that serve sweet and savory waffles (which you can hardly find in KL). Mr Tim wanted to do something new and different than other restaurants.

They created the name "Chequers" based on their waffle making machine that has square shape with pattern that looks like chequers board game. They opened their restaurant in TTDi because the owner and family grew up in this area and they knew their neighbourhood very well. Now, we really understood the theme of Chequers Restaurant.

They don't really focus on what type of waffles. They focus on serving waffles that crispy on the outside and soft in inside. Besides that, they also focus on Malaysian flavor in order to meet Malaysian taste. All the waffle menu are made from homemade recipes. What makes their waffles stand out is because of the the spiciness flavor they used. They want to create impact on the taste of their dishes. Their savory waffles are their most signature in their menu.

Let’s check out on what menu that we have tried.

Mr Tim has recommended us to try their top 3 dishes which are Double Deck Croque Monsiuer, Mexican Fried Chicken and Deconstructed Tiramisu. Two Savory dishes and one dessert.

Double Deck Croque Monsiuer (RM19)

This savory waffle dish is so delicious! Perfect meal for breakfast or brunch. It is a savory waffle sandwich with turkey ham and tomato wrapped with egg. Served with cheese sauce topped with sunny side egg.

Mexican Fried Chicken (RM26)

Mexican Fried Chicken is so good! We love it. It is Jalapeno and corn waffle over deep fried boneless chicken, honey glazed beef bacon, coriander and grilled capsicum. Served with tomato salsa, mesclun salad and honey mustard sauce. The chicken are marinated, butter and fry. The tomato salsa adds the spiciness into this dish. This dish is a balance meal because it has sweet and savory flavor.

Deconstructed Tiramisu (RM18)

Deconstructed Tiramisu is dessert dish. Disassembled into waffle sticks, mascarpone cheese with chocolate shavings and a side of espresso shot. Dipped the waffles stick into the tiramisu and espresso. It is so delicious! We can’t stop eating it until it finished.

In order to avoid from customers getting bored with only waffles menu, they have came up other menus such as pasta. Besides that, Malaysian people are not used to eat waffles for breakfast so that is why they came up with other menus. All ingredients are from local. But they also used ingredients from outside. It all depends on the season. Mr Tim said they changed their menu at least three times.

The owner has opened up a bakery shop which at upstairs of this restaurant. They focused on making donuts. They do not sell normal sweet donuts but also savory donuts which you can't find it at other places.  In future, they are planning to add more american cuisine such as pizza (New York Style)

They currently used 2nd floor to host private events. Normally the 2nd floor is closed during weekdays because they are doing bakery on the that floor. If the customers want to take a look, maybe they will open. The restaurant will still open while an event is going on.

As we come to the end of our food review at Chequers Restaurant, we would like to come to a conclusion. We really enjoyed our time at Chequers. The customer service was friendly and fast. The food that we tasted was amazing and delicious. This restaurant is different than other restaurant. If you like to try savory waffles, Chequers Restaurant at TTDI will be your best choice. We would recommend this restaurant to anyone we knew.
